Samassi Abou - your memories
I am fulfilling a lifetime's ambition and writing an article about Samassi Abou for the Yahoo Football website.

Please share your memories about the great man here. I will credit your quotes (to WHO) and publish the piece when it's done.

Here's one I made earlier about Andy Impey: https://uk.sports.yahoo.com/news/blast-past-no-9-andy-110646704.html

Many thanks.

Didn't he once ask Redknapp why the crowd were Booing him ... Remember him scoring 2 in a 6-0 win against Barnsly and he looked fantastic then he missed from about 2 yards against Arsenal in the cup quarter final ..

Northern Sold -

I was at that game in the away end, my mates being spurs can you believe, I was only 20 , drunk as a skunk , went for a pee , came back got to the top of the stairs and that incident happened , the buzz of the crowd and the passion at the top of my voice " come on West Ham " . . . The next thing I know I'm being bundled to the floor by the stewards which fortunate for me saved me a massive kick in , took a few digs and cnut spat right in my face . . .

Sobered up pretty quickly after that , loads of hammers in the spurs end that day as I was getting launched out thinking I could get singled out now loads of hammers were in the same spot . . regrouped and drunk some more

Abbbboooooouuuuuuuuuu !!!!!!

Leicester at home final game of the season, him scoring as brace and Lampard getting on the scoresheet for us, Cottee banging one in for them.

Some great memories of that season.

Did'nt he score in a 2-1 loss to Arsenal? Ian Wright scoring a brace? Must of been late 90's

Bumped into him during his West Ham days. He spent time chatting about the club, how he loved the capital and working for Harry. He spent the entire discussion in a slightly "hyper" mood - elated and a little bit unhinged. It was proper Aboooouuuu!

In the same cup game, Keown grabbed him around his neck (he seemed a giant compared to him). Abou responded with a gentle headbutt and Keown fell to the deck like the sack of shit he is in an attempt to get him sent off.

Both were awarded yellow cards and the whole ground laughed at Keown.

Re: Samassi Abou - your memories
He always seemed to be warming up during games.

Whenever he trotted up towards the BML, he was greeted to a chorus of "ABOOOOOOOOOU".

He told a team mate that the supporters at that end of the ground were jeering him. The team mate - for the life of me, I can't remember who it was now - had to explain to him that we were chanting his name.

Re: Samassi Abou - your memories
I remember being mystified by his sending off against Spurs, as it was an off-the-ball incident which the majority of the crowd did not see. Did he wallop Ramon Vega - that seemed to be the consensus.

Also remember a likely move to Bradford falling through because he went home to the Ivory Coast one summer and contracted malaria. I've no idea if this is true, but one of the paper's paraphrased him as saying he thought he would be immune because he came from the area!

Proper Abooouuu!

In the home end at Stamford Bridge, right in front of me Andy Myers clumsily pushes Abou to the ground, I forgetting where I was jump up and scream PENALTY! Which was duly given, I sat back down half feigning composure in my best ' couldn't give a fuck' style.

We lost 2-1.

A bit rubbish but a great name to chant allowed him to get away with being mediocre?

Us fans are funny like that. It was why I always wanted the french player Rod Fanny to join us. He might have been rubbish but think of the chants we could have heard ! A missed opportunity there ;-)

Re: Samassi Abou - your memories
The two performances that stick out for me where at WHL when he was ripping them to pieces and they bastards deliberately got him sent off. Was so unfair and just spiteful. He was literally making Campbell look like a child so they got into him, winding him up and got him sent off. But prior to that his performance was outstanding.

The other was at home against Barnsley. We beat them 6-1 and I think he scored two and had a hand in at least 2 or 3 others. His performance that day was on a different level. Yes, it was only against Barnsley, but he almost single handedly beat them that day. It was a masterclass in attacking play. He showed skill, vision, pace and power. Won every header, brought others into play and made things happen all day. Was an absolute joy to watch and I will never, ever forget that performance.

But more personally one night my local was full to the rafters on a Saturday night after a game we had won and he had played well. Chants of Abbbboooouuuu were going around. He was still living in a hotel at that point and a very good friend on mine (who knew a few players etc etc) said to us he was going to get Abou from the hotel and will bring him to the club. We all laughed but off he went on his mobile phone. I think the hotel was Upminster way.

To our utter astonishment an hour later my friend turns up with Abou. The place goes mental. He comes in and the kids are going ballistic and literally surround him like the scene from Temple of Doom with all the Indian kids. It was fantastic.

He stayed for two hours. And was bought a few Bud's but spent the majority of time having photo's, doing autographs, he even played pool with some kids. Then stood at the bar and talked (as best he could as his English was awful). He got plenty of pats on the back, hand shakes and arms round him. And he even became an honorary member and got a membership card.

But I have to say what an absolute genuine, honest and endearing bloke he was. He was very laid back and very polite. He almost couldn't believe he was there.

Towards the end he kept saying to my mate "Harry get angry. I go. I go" but was almost too polite to make an issue of it but as soon as he said it my mate whisked him off.

Was quite surreal. But I say he was a diamond and everyone loved him.
